Zanzibari daydreams

Under the dangling banyan tree,
dark-skinned Zanzibari gentlemen
in colorful flair topi hats
greet each other:
"mambo."

Past splendid spiked doors
rimmed with bronze horns
and ornate carvings
ebony Zanbibari women
in floral pastel veils
greet each other:
"assalam aleikum"

Lost in Zanzibrari daydreams,
I sit outside the
fading white-washed
Palace of Zanzibar--
the arched structure
now a museum to the
Sultans of Zanzibar,
whose reign has
faded like the
white chipping paint
on the Arabesque facade.
