American Food Roots

Where Storycorps meets James Beard initiative

Great story on the Kojo Nnamdi Show about American Food Roots, and the stories behind the recipes of American food.  Ty Abba.

As I have written here before, when I taught the U.S. Citizenship exam, my two favorite classes were after July 4th and after Thanksgiving.  The class of immigrants from the world over would discuss how they celebrated the holidays.  My favorite was always hearing about how the Indian vegetarians prepared their thanksgiving sans Turkey and with curry mashed potatoes.

On a last note, a fun story coming out of the Twin Cities on creating business opportunities for Somali immigrants via halal hotdog trucks.  I'll take one of those, this 4th o' July.
